Transport Workers: Strategic Positioning

Union Action December 2001

The importance of this sector is not only based on the large number of affiliates and members, but also on the strategic significance of this industry for Hong Kong. Hong Kong operates the world's busiest container port, with over 175 million tonnes of seaborne cargo handled each year. Last year 18.1 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units, or box containers) were handled in the territory's eight terminals. The addition of Container Terminal Number 9 in 2002 will increase this figure by another 2.6 million TEUs. It is estimated that by 2010 the capacity of Hong Kong's ports will reach 29.7 million TEUs. In this context organising container truck drivers is a key part of the union's strategy, and an important source of bargaining power.
