The
Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association (HKAOA) has
formally affiliated to HKCTU. The HKAOA was registered
as a trade union in 1963 to represent the interests
of pilots and flight engineers employed by Cathay
Pacific Airways. The HKAOA has over 1,000 members,
and is involved in a long-running dispute with management
over rostering and salary issues. Throughout the dispute
the management has refused to negotiate, responding
instead with threats and intimidation. Six days into
the work-to-rule industrial action by the union in
July 2001, the management fired 49 pilots. This was
in addition to three pilots who were dismissed a week
earlier. Four of the seven union negotiators and eight
of the union's 20 committee members were among those
dismissed. On March 14, 2002, a formal complaint was
lodged with the ILO concerning Cathay Pacific management's
violations of Conventions 87, 98 and 158.
